A look at the history of natural dyes, their use in textiles, including coverlets, mordants and their effects on dye tones. Students will mordant wool and silk yarns and will dye with madder, cochineal, indigo, walnut crystals, and a yellow dye to be determined.

June 25 -Dyeing with Indigo/Shibori - A one day class. Hosted by the National Museum of the American Coverlet. 10-4. Indigo is one of the oldest dyes, used by various cultures throughout the world. We will look at the history of indigo and how the dye works (i.e., a reduced oxygen vat). Students will dye wool and silk and will try some simple shibori and space-dyeing techniques

The Bedford County Historical Society is sponsoring a bus tour to the Whiskey Rebellion Festival in Washington, PA on Saturday, July 8, 2017. The festival offers many activities and historical tours of historic sites in Washington, so you will have the whole day on your own. You are responsible for all meals and activities. We will depart the Walmart parking lot at 8:00 am. There will be buses available on site to take you to different locations of the festival. July 15 - Intro to Spinning - A one day class hosted by the National Museum of the American Coverlet. 10-4. One-day class. Learn various types of fibers, how spinning works, how to prepare fibers, and spinning using a drop spindle. Several types of drop spindles and spinning wheels will be available to try.

July 16 - Tape Loom Weaving - A one day class hosted by the National Museum of the American Coverlet. 10-4. A look at the history of tape weaving, weave structure, materials, patterns, different types of tape looms, and how tapes were used in 18th and 19th century textiles and clothing. Students will learn how to measure out warp, warp the looms, and weave. Tape looms will be provided, but you can bring your own loom is you prefer. Looms will be available for purchase at the end of the class.

Fortnight Presentation at Fort Bedford Museum -Todd Johnson, also known as “Ghost in the Head”, has been educating and presenting programs about the eastern woodland Indians since 1999. He is dedicated to teaching groups about the traditions of his Huron heritage. The passion he has for sharing his knowledge is apparent in his programs. Todd has been a model for internationally known historical artist Andrew Knez Jr., and has been featured in many of his paintings. Bedford Elks Halloween Parade in Downtown Bedford: 7:30pm, with a rain date of Wednesday, October 25th. The parade will start at the east end of town, travel up East Pitt Street, and turn left onto Juliana Street where it will pass in front of the judges stand before disbanding at the Bedford County Courthouse. The Halloween parade will begin to form at 6:30pm. Individuals or organizations interested in being part of the parade may pick up a registration form at the Bedford Borough office, at www.downtownbedford.com, or on Facebook at Bedford Elks Halloween Parade. Mummers, who need no prior registration, should report to the Landmark restaurant parking lot the night of the parade. Participants are reminded that throwing candy is prohibited, however, passing out candy is allowed. If selling, transient vendors are required to obtain a license from the Borough. A look at the history of tape weaving, weave structure, materials, patterns, different types of tape looms, and how tapes were used in 18th and 19th century textiles and clothing. Students will learn how to measure out warp, warp the looms, and weave. Tape looms will be provided, but you can bring your own loom is you prefer. Looms will be available for purchase at the end of the class.
