This is our "Big Mountain" park. This year-round wilderness adventure consists of over 5,600 acres of woodland. An extensive hiking trail system offers 17 miles of trails through changing timber types, across cool streams and occasionally passing by pioneer homesteads that are slowly yielding to the forces of nature. Shawnee is our "Lake Park". Located along Route 30 near Schellsburg, Shawnee consists of 3,983 acres with a 451 acre lake. Picnic tables and fire rings are available. Non-powered and electric boats are permitted with a permit or registration. Rentals available. A 12 mile hiking / biking system is also suitable for cross country skiing. This small park (334 acres) is located 2 miles south of Saxton (near the northeastern tip of Bedford County). This finger of land is bounded on 3 sides by the Raystown Branch of the Juniata River. This is a good area for canoeing/kayaking or perhaps a picnic.

HUNTING
Bedford County has excellent hunting. Whitetail deer and turkey hunting are especially popular here.

James Buchanan State Forest is comprised of thousands of acres that cover Bedford, Fulton and Franklin counties. State Game Lands run through our area as well, and the JB State Forest Map shows these areas too. Blue Knob State Park has over 5,000 acres open to hunting ... Shawnee ... over 3,000. HIKING
There are excellent hiking trails for you to enjoy in Bedford County. A very pleasant, very simple hike is the Lake Shore Trail, which is a 3.5 mile loop around Shawnee Lake. there are no obstacles like fallen trees and creeks to cross. This loop is also used by bikes. Pea gravel covers most of the trail, in a wooded / country lake setting. The loop is at Shawnee State Park. There are other, longer and more challenging loops at Shawnee as well. 15 miles total of good hiking trails, ranking from easy to moderately difficult. For mountain hiking, Blue Knob State Park is your spot. 17 miles of trails through changing timber types, crossing streams, etc... Trails are moderate to difficult. The Mid State Trail goes through Bedford County and runs over 160 miles, from the Maryland border, all the way to Pine Creek Gorge.
