This tour will focus on historical sites and early transportation along the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor. A picnic box lunch will be provided at noon with a sumptuous meal just before leaving for home.

 

9:30 am

Meet your tour guide at the Gateway Travel Plaza ... located at Exit #161of the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76) in Breezeood, PA). A brief bathroom break will enable the guests to stretch their legs, etc... The first stop of the day will then be the historical Juniata Crossings Inn, where you will have the opportunity to pickup a gift or souvenir.

 

10:15 am

A quick stop at the Travelers Rest will give you an opportunity to photograph a promotional art deco style vintage gasoline pump entitled "Tote Pump" which is one of many that was erected by the Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor folks. Then enjoy a historical overview of the importance of Bloody Run (now named Everett, PA) and its importance in the Civil War; see a new mural promoting the area and the Lincoln Highway and then visit the Huntingdon and Broad Top Railroaders Museum. A second vintage pump entitled "The Five Dollar Bill" is at this location. You will see a model of the railroad that provided coal to the cities of America during the industrial revolution and also some "rolling stock"!

11:30 am

Tour historical downtown Bedford, PA and see one of the oldest operational Courthouses in the Commonwealth; a pre-American revolutionary cemetery; Civil War monument and the world famous Bedford Springs Hotel (summer White House of President James Buchanan). Guests will be given the opportunity to shop in the downtown stores and antiques co-ops. For those not desiring to shop, a short walking tour of the downtown and/or the Bedford County Courthouse will be offered.

 

12:45 pm

Travel past an early art-deco service station; the gigantic Coffee Pot; an old tavern (the Jean Bonnet Tavern); and the longest covered bridge in Bedford County, the Herline Covered Bridge.

 

1 pm

While enjoying a spectacular lake and nature at its finest, enjoy a box lunch at one of the pavilions in Shawnee State Park and learn about its history and the Indians of the area. See the farm of Dr. Bowman, the chancellor of the University of Pittsburgh and the man who designed the Cathedral of Learning in Oakland.

 

1:45 pm

Tour the 1806 Log Church, proposed to become a National Historic Landmark on its two hundredth anniversary. Enjoy the epitaphs in the graveyard. See another vintage gasoline pump entitled "Vincent Van Gas".

 

2:30 pm

Visit the Bison Farm and sample "jerky" or buy an item from their unique gift shop. Learn about the farm's operation. See another of the beautiful murals painted on a barn to promote the Pennsylvania Heritage Route (Rt. 30; the old Lincoln Highway). The final vintage gasoline pump of the day is entitled "Remembering our Native American Past".

3:30 pm

See several more covered bridges (the Cuppett's, Ryot, and Kniseley's); stop at a candy shop (Faye's); and then visit a million dollar apple packaging operation (if it's during apple season). Guests will be given the opportunity to see the packaging and storage facilities and purchase fresh fruit.

 

4:30 pm

A sumptuous dinner will be served by colonial dressed waitresses at Slicks Ivy Stone Restaurant near Osterburg, PA. Enjoy the antiques and collectibles throughout the establishment. Your guide will depart at the original pickup point (Gateway Travel Plaza) on your return trip home.
