| Flight 93 Memorial This memorial was created to honor the men and women lost on September 11th, 2001 in a field just 30 mins west of Bedford. It was created by the visitors who wished to leave some form of tribute to loved ones lost that day. DIRECTIONS: From Bedford, follow US 30 west approximately 25 miles to Lambertsville Road (3 miles beyond Buckstown). Turn left onto Lambertsville Road. | Gettysburg National Military Park For the most direct route, take Route 30 east. After arriving in Gettysburg, to get to the National Park Visitors Center, turn right at Washington St. Drive a few blocks. The Visitors Center is to your right. There are many commercial activities dedicated to the civil war in Gettysburg, but we recommend your visit begin with the National Park Visitor Center ... enclosed within this building is a museum gallery, film and cyclorama program. | Antietam National Battlefield The bloodiest day of the Civil War happened on this ground in Sharpsburg, MD. (9 miles south of Hagerstown). You should go to the visitor center first, open daily 8:30-7 (June-Sept), 8:30-5 (Oct-May). It is located 1 mile north of Sharpsburg, along SR65. From there, visit the battlefield (an 8 mile driving tour can be obtained from the visitors center.) Final stop might be the Antietam National Cemetery. From Breezewood, take I-70 East to Hagerstown. | Harpers Ferry National Historic Park 30 mins south of Antietem, this was key to the security of Washington DC. Also the site of John Brown’s famous raid, attempting to ignite a slave insurrection. | Col. Higgins Defense In central Bedford County, entrenchments were prepared to provide protection against an anticipated Confederate attack (to take or destroy the Altoona Railroad). The Confederate defeat at Gettysburg removed this threat. The entrenchments are still visible. Take Rt. 30 to Pennwood (D-3 on centerfold county map) Take Upper Snake Spring Rd North. Go to the left to stay on SR1005. The entrenchments will be on your left. |

| Fort Bedford Museum (See ad on page 23) Fort Bedford was built by the British as part of their fortified supply road, (Forbes Trail). The British Road was the instrument that helped the British eradicate the French presence at Fort Duquesne. This Fort was a protector of that road The Museum was constructed on the site of the 1758 Fort. | Fort Ligonier Part of the British campaign against the French, built to support Forbes Trail and the effort to destroy the French at Fort Duquesne. There is now a museum that is open April 15th - Nov. 15th Mon-Sat from 10-4:30 and Sunday 12-4:30. $8 - Adults; $5 - Youth. | Fort Necessity and Braddock’s Grave The battle at the “Great Meadows” was the opening battle of the French and Indian War. The National Park Service Visitor Center is the best place to begin your visit. The ranger on duty will answer any questions you have and collect your entrance fee. Plan 2 1/2 hours. Braddock’s Grave – In 1755, Major General Braddock led an expedition against Fort Duquesne, with a young aide named George Washington. Braddock was mortally wounded during the campaign, and died after the British retreat. Washington officiated at Braddock’s funeral and Braddock was buried in the road that his men had built. The army then marched over the grave to obliterate traces of it. He was later reinterred onto a small knoll adjacent to the road 90 mins W of Bedford in Farmington, PA. (724) 329-5512. |

OLD BEDFORD VILLAGE  A wonderful collection of historic homes, shops, craftsmen and characters. Characters from the past interact as they occupy the village. Allow about 2 hours. | The National Museum of the American Coverlet The first institution devoted solely to American woven coverlets, both figured and geometric. | The Critter Tour The critter tour is a great activity for a rain-free day. Deer, emu, bison and lots’a trout can keep the little ones interested for an hour or so. Two potential hazards to avoid: First: Do not have a dog along with you (notice the “dog-free” area at the deer farm). Second: Watch the kids around the trout pools. In the history of the trout hatchery, only a few people have ever fallen into the pools. Don’t make history. |

| Fish Hatchery There is a small museum at the Fish Hatchery, including wildlife species from Pennsylvania. Various fish species, birds, reptiles and mammals are on display. This is a working fish hatchery (this station raises over 350,000 trout for release per year) and the trout tanks also hold live trout in various stages of development. Kids love it ... and rarely do they ever fall into the trout pools. (The pools aren't treacherous or anything, but it is possible to do). So, if you have a young little daredevil who likes to show off his/her "balancing" skills, do hold onto their hand when walking through the trout pools. | There are excellent hiking trails for you to enjoy in Bedford County. A very pleasant, very simple hike is the Lake Shore Trail, which is a 3.5 mile loop around Shawnee Lake. there are no obstacles like fallen trees and creeks to cross. This loop is also used by bikes. Pea gravel covers most of the trail, in a wooded / country lake setting. The loop is at Shawnee State Park. There are other, longer and more challenging loops at Shawnee as well. 15 miles total of good hiking trails, ranking from easy to moderately difficult.For mountain hiking, Blue Knob State Park is your spot. 17 miles of trails through changing timber types, crossing streams, etc... Trails are moderate to difficult. Maps of each park are available from the Visitors Bureau by calling 1-800-765-3331. For long hikes ... The Mid State Trail goes through Bedford County and runs over 160 miles, from the Maryland border, all the way to Pine Creek Gorge.  Blue Knob State ParkBlue Knob State Park is our "Big Mountain Park." 5,600 acres of woodland wilderness. Usually a few degrees cooler than the surrounding areas, due to the elevation ... 3146 at the peak. 17 miles of hiking trails, many also open for horseback riding. Swimming is open (weather permitting) at the swimming pool from 11am-7pm from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Some trails open for mountain biking. Chappel's Field Trail is a good challenge for beginners. More experienced riders find the Three Springs Trail a good intermediate ride. Expert riders find challenge in the Rock N' Ridge Trail and Mountain View Trail. They, of course, offer picnicking (pavilions can be reserved up to 11 months in advance for a fee). Unreserved pavilions also available on first come / first served basis. Also, 200 picnic tables are available throughout the park. Camping is available at the 42-tent and trailer sites open from the 2nd Friday in April through the 3rd Sunday in October. Snowmobile trails are open after hunting season is over, with 8 miles of trail / road. Expert Cross Country Skiing trails. Phone: (814) 276-3576 Driving Directions: From Bedford take I-99 / Route 220 north to Route 869 west (Osterburg exit). Take Route 869 west to Pavia. Follow signs from Pavia to the park. Shawnee State Park Shawnee State Park is our "Small Lake Park" with 3900 acres surrounding a beautiful 451 acre lake. 15 miles of hiking trails, including the very pleasant "Lake Shore Trail." This 3.5 mile is a very easy walk through outdoor splendor. This trail is also a pleasant bike trail. Swimming along the sand and turf beach, with modern bathhouses, flush toilets & showers. Beach is open late May through mid September (8am-sunset). Lake fishing ... stocked with warm water game fish, including smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike, walleye, etc... ADA accessible fishing pier available. Non powered (and electric motor powered) boats can be launched from the 3 launching areas. 183 mooring spaces available (Must have State Park launching permit.) Boat rentals available during summer. Very easy cycling on the 3.5 mile Lake Shore Trail. Mountain Biking on the other park trails is of moderate difficulty. Camping available at 293 sites with picnic table and fire rings. 50 of these sites have electric hookups. Camping from April through late December. Picnicking pavilions that may be reserved for a fee. Also, unreserved pavilions for first come / first served. Snowmobile trails are open to registered snowmobiles on an 11 mile trail network. Sled riding near Picnic Area #2 is great. Ice fishing popular here. Be sure ice is at least 4 inches thick. For a nice 3.5 mile loop, try the Lake Shore Trail at Shawnee State Park (10-foot wide path also used for bikes, is kept free of obstacles) ... excellent scenery on an easy to ski trail. |
