If you are just looking to get out and walk around for an afternoon we recommend checking out our Walking Tours page which has information on guided and self guided tours in the county. In addition to the walking tours, a great outdoor family activity can be found in the GPS Games Brochure. This brochure is sure to get you off the couch and exploring the history of Bedford and Everett. If you like geocaching you will LOVE this!
There are many excellent hiking trails to explore in Bedford County. In addition to biking, you can also hike or walk along the first stage of the Bedford Heritage Trail, as well as the Pike to Bike and H&BT Rail Trail. (see above)
You can also head to Shawnee State Park where you will find 15 miles of hiking trails ranging from easy to moderately difficult. We recommend the popular Lake Shore Trail for a simple 3.4 mile loop around the lake.
For mountain hiking, Blue Knob State Park is your spot. This state park has 17 miles of moderate to difficult trails through changing timber types and crossing streams.
For long hikes, the Mid State Trail, part of the Great Eastern Trail, is Pennsylvania’s longest footpath trail. It stretches over 260 miles from Maryland to New York State passing directly through the center of Everett, PA. Tenley Park in Everett offers camping by permit a for trail hikers. Canoe & Kayak
Kayaking is a great way to explore some of the waterways in Bedford County. We have several creeks, a river, and a few lakes.
The Raystown Branch of the Juniata River is a gentle river that can provide a very pleasant day of paddling or fishing. The river can be a long river trip experience. Canoing and Kayaking can also be done at Shawnee State Park, near Schellsburg, Koon Lake and Lake Gordon in Southern Bedford County, and Raystown Lake,. which is fed by the Raystown Branch, is just north of Bedford County. (click on each for map locations).

ATV and Snowmobile Trails
Believe it or not, you can even bring your ATV or snowmobile to Bedford County and explore several miles of trails. Both James Buchanan and Gallitzin State Forrests serve as home to many different kinds of trails, including ATV and snowmobile.
James Buchanan State Forrest
Martin Hill ATV Trail System - This is a 17 miles summer trail system with varying degrees of difficulty. Along the way you will find Blankley Picnic area as well as a great vista near Shaffer Mountain Rd. Parking Location Trail Map
Gallitzin State Forrest
Babcock Snowmobile Trail - While just barely touching Bedford County, Gallitzin State Forrest offers the Babcock Snowmobile Trail with easy access from RT 56, slightly across the County line in Somerset Co. Parking Location Trail Map
Blue Knob State Park
Snowmobile routes in Blue Knob State Park are open daily after the end of hunting season in December. The trail system consists of eight miles of trails and roads and is marked with orange diamonds. Park roadways are not open for snowmobile use. Click the link below for a park map, or contact the visitors bureau for a free hard copy.
Shawnee State Park
Snowmobile routes in Shawnee State Park are open daily after the end of hunting season in December. Registered snowmobiles are permitted on an 11-mile trail network in the eastern side of the park.
All State Forrest and State Parks require your ATV to be registered and insured. Only ATV's with 3 or more wheels are permitted. Motorcycles and trail-bikes are NOT permitted.
